چکیده

In this study, the two-level simulation (TLS) modeling strategy developed earlier for momentum mixing is assessed in turbulent flows with passive scalar and transport. Compared to conventional algebraic transport equation based subgrid-scale closures large-eddy (LES), where effects of unresolved small scales (SS) motion on large (LS) are modeled, TLS model, both explicitly evolved a coupled two-scale decomposition method called TLS. Earlier studies demonstrated ability SS model simulate high Reynolds number wall-bounded reasonable LS grid resolution. present extended channel flows. A comprehensive priori assessment performed using direct numerical datasets fully flow at frictional Reτ=395 Schmidt numbers Sc= 1 4. This carried out study evolution field physical spectral space also assess prediction quantities relevant scalars such as dissipation rate, counter-gradient transport, backscatter. is, then, used posteriori near-wall hybrid TLS–LES approach model.

Scaling properties of the equation for passive scalar transport in wall-bounded turbulent flows

Data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of fully-developed turbulent channel flows subjected to a constant surface heat-flux are used to explore the scaling behaviours admitted by the mean thermal energy equation. Following the framework of Wei et al. (2005) [1,2], the analysis employs a theory based on the magnitude ordering of terms in the mean thermal energy equation of wall-bounded tur...

Turbulent Prandtl number effect on passive scalar advection

A generalization of Kraichnan’s model of passive scalar advection is considered. Physically motivated regularizations of the model are considered which take into account both the effects of viscosity and molecular diffusion. The balance between these two effects on the inertial range behavior for the scalar is shown to be parameterized by a new turbulent Prandtl number. Three different regimes ...

Schmidt number effects on turbulent transport with uniform mean scalar gradient

We study by direct numerical simulations the effects of Schmidt number ~Sc! on passive scalars mixed by forced isotropic and homogeneous turbulence. The scalar field is maintained statistically stationary by a uniform mean gradient. We consider the scaling of spectra, structure functions, local isotropy and intermittency. For moderately diffusive scalars with Sc51/8 and 1, the Taylor-scale Reyn...
